    TRANS-DESIGN

    Chief Curator: Ding Yi

Over the last three decades, we have kept encountering and brushing past novelties, going from one new idea to another, and have in the process expanded our world knowledge and expertise. China's industrial design has come a long journey of borrowing and adoption, to today's creative stage. This evolutionary process has been part of the world's ideological and technological revolutions.

Urbanization is changing the way we live. It is shattering the rural-urban dichotomy, to generate in-between existential forms, such as mega-towns, inner cities and sub-centers. And these have come together to lay the needed groundwork for the booming of consumerism. At a critical juncture when constructing new urban forms and living patterns is urgently needed, design kicks in to provide a means of change, passive or proactive. The question we need to ask is how are we going to define change, and identify its ingredients, trends, and the developments that may give us hints to the direction, novelty and relevance of tomorrow’s design? Changes in design, physical and ideological, is omnipresent and palpable, and we need to keep upgrading our means of steering the evolving technology and ideas. In this show, we attempt to reveal the power of design, and predict the direction in which design is headed by examining the connotative and denotative significance of the changes occurring in the design community.

FUTURE(S) BY DESIGN

Ben Hughes (UK)

The element which forms the backbone of the exhibition, both in a structural and ideological sense is a 40 metre long bamboo and fibreglass composite wind turbine blade. This creates a sculptural and material statement about sustainability and renewable energy that emphasises the need to put aside an obsession for designer lifestyles, and focus on a future underpinned by sustainability. As well as this core theme, this exhibition hopes to depict a possible future as a playful, diverse and interconnected world where locally developed solutions by enthusiastic amateurs, artists and designers are a possibility not a dream. Some objects are speculative or imaginary and others are real products - in development or already available - that show a diverse vision of the future where design can play a positive role in countering some of the negative effects of the relentless quest for progress.

IDEAS IN ACTION

Beatrice Leanza (Italy)

‘Ideas in Action’ brings together multidisciplinary projects linking conceptual and practical strategies of design enactment that mobilize extant relations of production, inheritance and place into new conformations. The exhibition aims at offering a critical look at forms of integrated thinking found in,  inspired by or echoing across contemporary scenarios of change in China that span from object-to-city making by way of rerouting connections across the social, cultural and spatial givens of uneven or unattended frameworks of development.

The implicit premise to this assembly of positions is the recognition that design performs today as a ‘meta-project’ across disciplinary and systemic structures of both intangible and material nature, which must labour at the interplay of processes grounded in practical know-hows as much as empower culturally dispositional faculties of locational character. What draws shared significance to these projects is their dynamic positioning within generative networks of co-doing and combining of knowledge, their detouring within the remedial scale of actions that can rekindle broken or obsolete relations of production, inheritance and place into novel processes of mutuality and co-dependency. The exhibition presents itself as a live stage within the larger framework of the 2016 Shanghai Art & Design Exhibition in the guise of a ‘dynamic master plan’ designed by Beijing-based reMIX Studio. The featured projects have been selected according to four analytical categories that portray distinct yet interwoven scales of operation and systems of knowledge, namely: Infrastructural Matrix, Growth Protocols, Infill, and Materiality & Objecthood.

FUSION POWER

In media society, culture becomes labels of effective feeds to the consumption side, also, it is frequently used as empty outlines for grand narratives. Then the real production of design seems less and less associated with culture by any means, as today’s designers always avoid talking about it. At the same time, we should be aware of the fact that globalization along with technology innovations brings contemporary world an extended, distorted, and intersected spatial reality, where culture grows and spreads, fast or slow, in unfamiliar ways, without its traditional geographical labels. If optimistic universal values of modernism have long ago lost grounds, regionalism is also challenged as we find it now difficult even to define a region under nowadays-sophisticated production consumption relationship. This is an age of power generated through fusion and also another age of discovery.

Shanghai, as a metropolis started from fusion, provides the most meaningful opportunity to examine the fusion phenomenon and culture today. In this exhibition section, we invited 12 groups of designers from diverse cultural backgrounds but all have connections with Shanghai currently or in the past. Each organizes a scene with a set of design works of their own and/or others’ sharing similar (or very different) pursuit or interests in respond to the fusion topic with their own position. Here we are not attempting nor able to depict a panoramic view of today’s design world, but rather to provoke discussions and explorations by looking at the emerging changes in design fields from a fresh perspective.

NEW GENE

Biological evolution, in essence, is a process of new species forming through changes in gene frequencies. From a biological point of view, large numbers of creatures are dying out every day, accompanied by the emergence of new ones. When we work to preserve endangered species, we should also pay full attention to the protection of new creatures. The emergence of new creatures depends on unobstructed interactions between different organisms - grafting, reorganization, mutation and blending. "New Creatures" will scan and scrutinize contemporary design and art, in an effort to lay bare the lively and exciting developments in design that have been hidden from view by globalization and consumerism. A biological point of view will be borrowed to examine and represent design in evolution. For this section, a new generation of sustainability-minded designers from around the world, inspired by new materials and technological advances, are sharing their questions and thoughts on the relationship between design, living and social progress. Faced with the unmistakable air of poor taste in today’s globalized world, unsustainable modes of production, and prevalent consumerism driven by fast-changing trends, they are working to change the status quo by embracing their own traditions and technological advances, and championing social responsibilities. They have an excellent sense of vision and social responsibility, and are keen observers of the relationship between design and life. They have an eye for elements that go into various designs, which meet the expectations of the general public without compromising individuality. They have excellent communication skills and are good listeners able to garner what a client is expecting. They are the “new creatures” of our times.
